Super School-Age Care’s Physical Activity in Childcare Policy

 PURPOSE:

This childcare recognizes the physical, social and developmental benefits of regular physical activity for young children. This childcare is dedicated to promoting the health of children through physical activity policies and practices.

 

POLICY:

This childcare program has made a commitment to adhere to best practice recommendations for physical activity in childcare. We do go outside everyday unless the weather is too cold or rainy. If the weather is –10 degrees or colder in temperature or in wind chill we will stay indoors.

 

Active opportunities

Time for structured (teacher-led) physical activity and unstructured play (at least 120 minutes) is provided

There are opportunities for outdoor active play at least twice a day

Children are not seated for periods of more than 30 minutes except for meal times and reading/ rest time

Videos or television is rarely shown

 

Play Environment

There is space for outdoor activities including a path for wheeled toys and an open, grassy area

There is an indoor space for activities

A variety of play equipment including fixed (swings, slides, climbing, ladders) and portable (bikes, balls, mats) is provided

Equipment is maintained

 

Staff Behavior

Staff joins children in active play

Staff encourages children to be active

Active playtime is not be withheld for misbehavior

 

Physical Activity Support

There is visible support for physical activity in the classroom (books, posters, pictures)

There is very limited display of sedentary activities (TV, videos, electronic games). We have no TV.

 

Physical Activity Training

Physical activity training is offered to staff at least once per year.

Physical activity ideas are offered to parents throughout the year.

Physical education is provided to children at least once per week

 

PROCEDURES:

This policy should be available to all staff at all times and should be adhered to. This policy will be reviewed annually.
